Details & Frequently-Asked Questions:
What kind of birds do you use?
We use pure-white, domestic Rock Doves. They are well cared for with excellent nutrition, weekly baths and they live in a specially designed Dovecote. Our doves are trained and conditioned for months to gain the stamina and athleticism required to perform multiple releases and flights home per week.
Do they ever, you know..."Poop" on people?
Our doves follow a strict feeding schedule. When they are released, it is on an empty stomach, so they are technically "Pooped Out" for over 12 hours before the event. There is very little chance of any mess. They are also very clean and bathe regularly in bath salts to keep them looking beautiful. They love playing in the bath and splashing each other!
Why don't I just buy some doves at the pet store to release?
The pet stores carry a type of domestic dove that has never been outside and has no homing ability. If you buy pet-store doves and release them, they will be homeless and likely starve to death or get killed by cars, cats, hawks etc. It is such a sad thing to know that many birds perish each year because some people don't take the time to research what they are doing. Trust a professional Dove Trainer.
Can you release them inside the church/hall/venue?
No. For the safety of our birds, they must be released outdoors. They are used to being released and once they start flying, they get their bearings and head straight home to eat, drink and relax with their mates in their nest boxes. We take their safety and well-being very seriously.
Do you release at any time of year?
Yes. We have Doves available year-round. There are two conditions required for a release: Decent weather and Daylight. Doves do not see well in the dark and the release cannot occur later than 1 hour before sunset. They cannot be released during heavy rain or snowfall, high winds or extreme cold. We take bookings all year and if there is a cancellation due to weather, we refund 100% of your payment.
How do you prepare the doves for a release?
Our Dove Teams are exercised regularly between releases. We keep them in very fit condition. The day before a release, the team gets special treatment - just like professional athletes. They are fed, bathed and checked for any soreness or injury that could pose difficulty in flying home. The birds are placed in a quiet pen the night before where they rest and "Poop Out" for the next day. On the morning of the release, the doves are individally given a final check-up and loaded into the release baskets. We load the baskets into our vehicles and head off to make another occasion extra special.
